Why I Decide to Start This Blog

1. Looking Back
I’ve always wanted to learn English properly, but after so many years, I’ve made little progress. Honestly, it doesn’t feel like I’ve ever really studied the language. Back in school, I studied just to pass exams. After graduation, I pretty much gave up. Watching English TV shows or movies was just for fun—it never really helped me learn.
I can’t exactly explain why I’ve always wanted to learn English, but the thought has never left my mind. Maybe I want to see more of the world, or maybe I think it’s cool to speak another language and connect with different people. At one point, I even thought having good English skills would help me land a better job.
But even now, I still haven’t made real progress. People often say, “You achieve what you focus on.” Honestly, I have no idea where my time has gone over the years, but I know it wasn’t spent on learning English.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve resolved to learn English, only to give up within a month. Every time I think about it, I feel a bit frustrated. Why haven’t I been able to learn it? Why didn’t I stick with it? Then I start blaming myself, thinking I’m just too lazy.
Of course, laziness is only part of the problem. The bigger issue is that I’ve always been too impatient. I wanted quick results, hoping to become fluent in a short amount of time. But how is that possible? Reality kept proving me wrong, and I’d lose motivation. Whenever something else caught my interest, my attention would quickly shift.
2. My Plan
Learning a language boils down to four core skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I’ve decided to start with writing, using this blog as my practice ground. At first, I’ll rely on translation tools since I can’t yet write complex sentences on my own. I’ll also use AI tools to act as my teacher and assistant.
After writing a blog post, I plan to read it out loud. This will help me remember pronunciations, sentence structures, and phrases. I might even record myself and upload the videos to YouTube as a way to keep myself accountable.
As for listening and reading, there are plenty of resources available, so I’m not too worried. I’ll pick materials that interest me and are just slightly above my current level. Right now, I’m thinking of using Modern Family as my main study material. It’s super popular in China and really enjoyable to watch.
I really hope I can stick to this plan this time. It’s time to give it my all for my dream.
